Brand Identity Pricing by Deliverable

3 min read Emily Carter

A full brand identity for a US small business costs between $5,000 and $25,000 in 2026. Most published guides give a range from $50 to $100,000, which is true and completely useless. This page prices each deliverable separately so you can assemble a realistic number for what you actually need.

Priced by deliverable

These are typical US studio rates. A freelancer will be lower, a large agency several times higher.

  • Discovery and positioning — $1,000 to $4,000. Interviews, competitor review, and a written statement of what you stand for. Skip it and every later decision becomes a matter of taste.
  • Naming — $2,000 to $10,000. Only if you need it. Includes shortlisting and basic trademark screening.
  • Primary logo and variants — $1,500 to $5,000. The family of marks, not one lockup.
  • Colour system — $500 to $1,500. Primary, secondary, and accessible text pairings that pass contrast requirements.
  • Typography — $500 to $1,500. Display and body pairing with licensing resolved for print, web and app.
  • Photography or illustration direction — $1,000 to $4,000. Rules and reference, not the shoot itself.
  • Brand guidelines document — $1,500 to $6,000. The difference between a brand and a folder of files.
  • Collateral and templates — $1,000 to $5,000. Business cards, decks, social templates, email signatures.
  • Rollout — highly variable. Signage, packaging and vehicle livery are separate projects.

What to cut when the budget is tight

In order, the safest things to defer:

  1. Rollout and collateral. Do these as you need them rather than up front.
  2. Photography direction. Useful, but you can operate without it for a year.
  3. Naming. If your name is adequate, keep it. Renaming is the most expensive decision in branding.

What not to cut: the guidelines document and the mark variants. Without variants your logo breaks the first time someone needs it on a dark background or in a square avatar. Without guidelines the brand drifts within months, because every new person applies it slightly differently.

Why the ranges are so wide

Three reasons, and only one of them is quality.

Scope confusion. Half the market calls a logo project branding. Compare deliverables lists, never headline prices.

Seniority. A studio where the person who pitched does the work costs differently from one where the work goes to a junior after the pitch. Ask who is doing it.

Business risk. Rebranding a company with existing customers carries risks a startup does not have, and the process has to account for that.

Signs a branding quote is not serious

  • No discovery phase at all
  • A fixed number of concepts promised before anyone has asked what the business does
  • No mention of file handover or intellectual property transfer
  • Guidelines described as optional
  • A price with no written scope attached

Common questions

How long does a brand identity take?

Six to twelve weeks for a small business. Longer if naming is involved or if approval sits with a committee.

Can I do branding before I have customers?

You can, but positioning without customer evidence is guesswork. Many businesses do a light identity early and a proper one once they know who buys and why.

Who owns the work?

You should, outright, on final payment. Get it in writing before the project starts, not after.

How we price it

Our brand identity work is quoted against a written deliverables list, so you can see exactly which of the items above you are buying and drop any of them. If you only need the mark itself, that is logo design and it costs considerably less.
