Local SEO for US Service Businesses

3 min read Daniel Brooks

Local SEO for a US service business comes down to four things that still work: a complete and active Google Business Profile, a steady flow of genuine reviews, consistent business details across the web, and service pages on your website that match how people search. Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and each of these steps improves at least one of them.

1. Your Google Business Profile

For many local customers, your profile is the first thing they see, before your website.

  • Primary category: choose the most specific category for your main service, because it strongly affects which searches you appear in
  • Service area: if you visit customers rather than receiving them, set a service area and hide your street address
  • Services and description: list your real services in plain language
  • Photos: real photos of your work, team and vehicles, added regularly
  • Hours: accurate, including holiday hours
  • Updates: share offers and recent work to keep the profile active

2. Reviews

Reviews influence both where you rank and whether people choose you.

  • Ask every satisfied customer at the moment they are happiest, with a direct link to leave a review
  • Reply to every review, positive and negative, professionally
  • Never buy reviews, reward people for positive ones, or post fake ones

In the United States, the FTC’s rule on consumer reviews and testimonials, in force since 2024, prohibits fake reviews and buying positive ones, with significant penalties. Google also removes reviews that break its policies.

3. Consistent business details

Your business name, address and phone number should appear exactly the same everywhere: your website, Google, Apple Maps, Bing, Yelp, industry directories and social profiles. Inconsistent details make it harder for search engines to trust which information is correct.

4. Your website’s local pages

  • One page for each core service, explaining what you do, who it is for and how to book
  • Location pages only for areas you genuinely serve, each with useful local detail rather than the same text with a different town name
  • Your contact details on every page, usually in the footer
  • LocalBusiness structured data, so search engines can read your business details reliably
  • Fast mobile pages, because most local searches happen on phones

What no longer works

  • Stuffing keywords into your business name on Google, which risks suspension
  • Dozens of near-identical location pages
  • Buying links from low-quality directories
  • Virtual office addresses used to appear in areas you do not serve

Common questions

How long does local SEO take?

Profile improvements can show results within weeks. Reviews and website content build over months, and competitive cities and services take longer.

Do I need an address to rank locally?

You need a real business, but service-area businesses can hide their address and still appear in local results for the areas they serve.

Does posting on Google Business Profile help?

It keeps your profile active and gives customers more reasons to choose you. It is worth doing, but reviews and categories usually matter more.
