Augmented Reality for Business

3 min read Marcus Bennett

Augmented reality pays off for a business when it answers a question customers already have before buying: how big is it, will it fit, how will it look on me, or how does this work? The strongest cases are seeing products in your own space, virtual try-on, and guided training or maintenance. If AR does not answer a real question like these, it is usually a novelty that does not justify the cost.

Case 1: Seeing products in your own space

Furniture, appliances, decor, equipment and other large products are hard to judge from photos. AR lets customers place a true-to-scale 3D model in their own room using their phone.

  • Why it works: it removes doubt about size and fit, a common reason for hesitation and returns
  • What you need: accurate 3D models of your products

Case 2: Virtual try-on

Eyewear, makeup, jewellery, watches, hats and shoes can be tried on through the phone camera using face and body tracking.

  • Why it works: it brings part of the in-store experience online
  • What you need: realistic product rendering, because poor tracking or unrealistic results put customers off instead of helping

Case 3: Training, maintenance and field work

AR can place instructions on top of real equipment, guide technicians step by step, or let a remote expert see what a worker sees and mark it up.

  • Why it works: it cuts errors and time on complex or infrequent tasks
  • What you need: clear procedures, and devices suited to the working environment

When AR probably is not worth it

  • Your product is easy to understand from photos and video
  • The experience would be used once for novelty and never again
  • You cannot keep accurate 3D models up to date as your products change
  • Your audience is unlikely to try an unfamiliar feature

Web-based AR or an app?

Web-based AR runs from a link in the browser, with nothing to download. It suits product pages and marketing, because customers do not need to install anything. iPhones can show 3D models in AR through Apple’s built-in AR Quick Look, and Android phones have comparable built-in viewers.

App-based AR, built with Apple’s ARKit or Google’s ARCore, offers better tracking, performance and features. It suits repeated use, such as training tools or apps your customers already open regularly.

How to start without overspending

  1. Pick the products or tasks where customers hesitate most
  2. Build AR for a small set first, such as your best sellers
  3. Compare engagement, conversion and return rates against similar products without AR
  4. Expand only if the numbers justify it

Common questions

Do customers need special hardware?

No. Most modern smartphones support AR. Headsets suit some training and industrial uses, but consumer AR usually runs on phones.

What drives the cost?

Mainly creating the 3D models, and whether you build for the web or a native app. For large catalogues, the models are often the biggest expense.

Is AR good for SEO?

Not directly. Its value is in helping customers decide, so measure it by conversions and returns rather than traffic.
