What Is Generative Engine Optimization?

4 min read Marcus Bennett

Generative engine optimization, often shortened to GEO, is the practice of making your content easy for AI search tools, such as ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews, to find, understand and cite in their answers. It builds on SEO rather than replacing it: most of what gets you cited is clear, accurate, well-structured content on a site search engines can crawl.

How AI search chooses what to cite

AI search tools find web pages related to a question, write an answer, and link to some of the sources they used. To be cited, your page first has to be found, which depends on it being crawlable and indexed, and then has to contain a clear, trustworthy answer the tool can use.

1. Make sure AI tools can reach your site

  • Check that your robots.txt does not block the crawlers AI search tools use, such as OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search and PerplexityBot
  • Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, because several AI search products draw on web search indexes, including Bing’s
  • Keep important content in the page’s HTML, not only inside images, PDFs or content loaded later by scripts

2. Answer the question directly

  • Put the answer in the first one or two sentences, before background and context
  • Use headings that match the real questions people ask
  • Keep paragraphs short and focused on one idea
  • Use lists and tables for steps, options and comparisons

3. Be specific and verifiable

AI answers tend to draw on content that states clear facts: real prices, timelines, definitions, figures and named methods. Vague marketing language gives a tool nothing to quote. Cite reliable sources for your claims, and publish original data or first-hand experience where you have it.

4. Build signals of trust

  • Clear business information, author details, contact details and policies
  • Consistent business details across your website, Google Business Profile and directories
  • Mentions and reviews on reputable third-party sites, not only on your own
  • Structured data, such as Organization and Article markup, so machines can read the page reliably

5. Keep content current

Update prices, dates and facts regularly, and show when a page was last updated. Out-of-date information is less likely to be used, and more likely to be wrong when it is.

How to tell if it is working

  • Ask the AI tools your customers use the questions they would ask, and note whether and how you are cited
  • Check your analytics for referral traffic from sources such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai
  • Watch impressions in Google Search Console, where appearances in AI Overviews are counted within overall Search performance

What GEO is not

No trick guarantees a citation. Hidden text, keyword stuffing and pages written only for machines are more likely to damage your visibility than improve it. The approach that lasts is the same as good SEO: useful, clear, accurate content on a technically sound site.

Common questions

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. AI search still depends on finding and trusting web pages, so strong SEO is the foundation GEO is built on.

Should I block AI crawlers?

If you want to appear in AI search answers, do not block the crawlers those tools use for search. Some crawlers collect content for training rather than search, and you can treat them separately. For example, blocking Google-Extended controls whether your content is used to train Google’s Gemini models, and does not remove you from Google Search.

Does this matter for local businesses?

Yes. People increasingly ask AI tools for recommendations. The same foundations apply, together with the steps in our local SEO guide.
